Toothless Chelsea beaten by Fiorentina
The paucity of Chelsea's striking options was once again laid bare on Wednesday as they finished their pre-season preparations with a lacklustre 1-0 loss at home to Fiorentina. Visiting captain Gonzalo Rodriguez bundled in the only goal in the 34th minute at Stamford Bridge and with Diego Costa once again absent due to hamstring trouble, Jose Mourinho's side toiled in attack as they went a fifth consecutive game without victory. Radamel Falcao and Loic Remy squandered another chance to prove themselves as understudies for the absent Costa, leaving Mourinho with food for thought ahead of the start of his side's Premier League title defence at home to Swansea City on Saturday.

China says has stopped reclamation work in South China Sea
By David Brunnstrom and Trinna Leong KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday that Beijing had halted land reclamation in the South China Sea, and called on countries in the region to speed up talks on how claimant states should conduct themselves in the disputed waters. In June, China said it would soon complete some of its reclamation in the Spratly archipelago of the South China Sea, while adding it would continue to build facilities on the man-made islands. The United States and Japan have expressed alarm at China's expansion in the South China Sea, which they suspect is aimed at extending its military reach, and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry raised the issue with Wang in the Malaysian capital.

Australia 'confident looking in right area', MH370 will be found
Australian authorities Thursday said they were confident the search for MH370 was being carried out in the right area and the plane would be found after Malaysia confirmed debris on an Indian Ocean island was from the missing flight. "(The La Reunion find) is consistent with all the work we've done so we're confident that we're looking in the right area and we'll find the aircraft there," Martin Dolan, chief commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, told ABC radio. Australia has been leading the hunt for the plane which vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board in March last year.

Khan shrugs off Floyd snub, expects Berto threat
Britain's Amir Khan took the high road Wednesday after being snubbed by unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather for a third time in quest of a high-profile Las Vegas welterweight showdown. Mayweather, 38, announced Tuesday that he would fight countryman Andre Berto next month in what the 48-0 champion has declared would be his final fight, although many doubt he will settle for retiring at the same iconic record as the late heavyweight Rocky Marciano without taking a chance at 50-0. "I wish my stablemate Andre Berto and trainer Virgil Hunter the very best of luck in the fight," Khan said.

Hollande, Putin reach agreement on cancelled warship deal
France said Wednesday it had agreed a compensation deal with Russia for failing to deliver two Mistral warships due to the Ukraine crisis, drawing to a close a months-long diplomatic and commercial spat. The fate of the ships has long plagued Franco-Russian ties following Paris' decision in November to put the 1.2-billion-euro ($1.3-billion) deal on ice as the West slapped sanctions on Moscow over its annexation of Crimea and backing of rebels in Ukraine. The French presidency said in a statement that Russia would be "fully reimbursed" for the two helicopter carriers, which France will keep.
