If there was ever any doubt about the doublespeak of Tariq Ramadan, it is erased in this discussion. Ramadan’s defence of the Turkish Islamists (now caught up in massive corruption scandals) as ‘progressive’ and his slick use of straw man arguments reveal the threat such snake oil charmers pose to Western Civilization. His defence of Sharia is sly and meant to lure his non-Muslim audience into a guilt trip, as if their opposition to such medievalism was racist. Hitchens on the other hand demonstrates clarity that is in such short supply today.

    He doesn’t say anything about “God is one and Mohammed is the last prophet” and whoever does not accept this is a kafir. They have declared Ahmadias as non-Muslims and also the Bahais as non-Muslim antagonists. Then who is Muslim? Only this man and Tarek Fatah?

    This Tariq is in effect saying the European principles are better and model and the Islamic majority countries are groaning under dictatorship, etc. So in effect he agrees that Islamic countries as such are not role models and the ideal is European democracies which is in essence secular and not religious at all. So the logical conclusion of his own arguments is that Islam as a religion has failed to imbibe or promote democratic values.
